CLIMBING IZTACCÍHUATL – (5,220 MSNM)

The Iztaccíhuatl is a group of seven extinct volcanoes, which is the third highest elevation in Mexico and eighth in North America, where is located one of the last glacier field, where you can enjoy walking on thousands of years of glacier field offer an exceptional view all time toward the Popocatepetl volcano, it’s an active volcano and sometimes has small eruptions, which without any risk gives us an excellent view from the high altitude.

Most people choose the standard route in Ixta, which is known as La Arista del Sol (The Sun ridge). The route pass through the feet and climb up the knees, then through the stomach to the breasts. Technical level is low, however the problem is the altitude, where the climbers commonly have a lot of ambition to reach the summit the fastest as possible. Where the climbers leave the base camp to attempt the Summit with positive vibration to conquer the summit, which take around 6 to 8 hours. Many climbers will get the summit successfully and other will not, it is advisable to have a good acclimatization & to be in shape to achieve the goal.

Day 1. - Mexico – National Park Izta – Popo

This day we leave around 9:00 a.m. from Mexico City with our Private transportation toward izta arriving at 10:00 am to Amecameca where we will have breakfast at the market, around 11:00 am we will arrive to the Cortez Pass where we will check in, arriving 11:30 am to the base camp at the foot of the Iztaccíhuatl volcano, around 1:30 pm we start walking to acclimatize, and 2:30 pm we will check our backpacks and climb tools as; crampons for the shoes, harnesses for each costumers, and offer a briefing for the next day climbing, when everything is ready & organized we have a dinner.

Day 2.- Base camp – attempt to Summit of Iztacihualt (5220 m)/17,121ft – Base camp –back to México city.

This day we get up around 12:00 am, after having our breakfast, we will be ready to attempt the third highest summit in the country, we started climbing around 1:00 am toward the summit (on the Portillos Route) we start from the feet overcoming the moraine with rock & sand slide, and overcoming the parts of rock with care, passing on unstable rocky side then traversing a very fine ridge, at the end overcoming the glacier for the summit, all the time wearing crampons, harness, helmet and using rope for our safety. Then we back to the jewel arriving around 2:00 pm and from there to izta – popo, arriving to Mexico City. 19:30 p.m.
